As a tenant, you have legal rights. Here are the most important ones to know.
Security of Tenure
Security of tenure means you have the right to stay even after the rental period expires, unless the landlord has valid reasons. Note: Private rental law does not include security of tenure.
Right to a Functional Home
The landlord is obliged to provide housing in acceptable condition, fix defects within reasonable time, and maintain the property.
Notice Period
Private rental: 1 month for tenant. Rental law: According to agreement, often 3 months. Notice must be in writing.
Deposit
Maximum 3 months rent by practice. Must be returned when moving out if no damages. Landlord may deduct for actual damages (not normal wear).
If Problems Arise
If you have problems with your landlord: document everything in writing, contact the Tenants' Association for advice, turn to the Rent Tribunal for disputes.
